i just wanna dance with you, let the whole world melt away
[On Wednesday of the fifth week on this side of the school, many of you have have noticed posters popping up in a lot of places. Easy to miss with all the excitement of blowing things up but still a curious thing. The next afternoon the Leading Player can be seen on the roof of the school, directing a shadowy figure with an impressive wingspan and an ass that won't quit on where to put tables as well as snapping her fingers to make the colors of the table cloths go from red to gold to red again.
Which brings us to Thursday evening and...
Prom night! The greatest night of your young afterlives if you watch any Western high school media from the past 60 years. The looks, the music, the copious amounts of fancy snacks, the sore feet from dancing heels and then spending the rest of the night in bare feet- it’s all part of the bigger package.
The courtyard and the roof have both been decked out in a special way for tonight. There are round tables set-up in both places, covered in yellow-gold tablecloths. Some of them have platters of snacks laid out on them, one has a large punch bowl that never seems to empty no matter how many drinks are taken from it.
On the roof there’s an extra table with pencils, small slips of paper, a box wrapped in gold wrapping paper and a notecard labeled Song Requests. Just write a song, pop it in the box and within a few minutes it starts playing! Weird, there doesn’t seem to be a sound system anywhere...
Red paper lanterns have been strung around the outline of the roof and between stakes in the courtyard, granting soft romantic light for a night to remember. Put on your best costume shop formal wear, get ready to lose your shoes after an hour and sneak in liquor even though most of you are of age.
After all…tonight belongs to you.]

He arrives a bit later once a few of the others are already there, decked out in a jacket with a much more suitably appealing pattern and colorscheme. The vest beneath the jacket is a deep black that stands out considerably thanks to the black-holo thread embroidery throughout, making Varian a sight quite impossible to miss. His pants are pinstripe and light blue, with white gloves and black knee-high boots that have been polished to an impeccable shine.
And it wouldn't be something from Salieri if he wasn't also wearing eyeliner, with a touch of light blue on the upper lid to really make both jacket and eyes pop. Complete the look with his hair actually tamed into a more...intentional mess- parts of his bangs braided to keep them held back with the longer bit of his hair tied in a low ponytail with a blue ribbon- and he almost looks like a completely different person. He looks more like the 16 year-old he's meant to be at the very least, despite having felt 14 for so long.
He's just mildly disappointed Salieri wouldn't let him draw his goatee back on...
He's not with Rina when he arrives, mostly because she'd planned to surprise him with her outfit. It was going to be a surprise on both ends, really, so anyone already there might come across Varian hovering at the punch bowl, eyeing it curiously like he's trying to figure out without trying it if it's been spiked or not. He can't say he'd be disappointed if it was.
Later, he's wandered to the snack table, though for some reason all he's eating is a single, lone apple. He looks a little melancholy while he bites it.
And then later still, he'll be up on the roof once he's joined up with Rina for some dancing, because like...of course.]

[Oh, Look, It's This Asshole. But it does seem to be scanning Varian's outfit with a bit of faint approval]

[Varian looks at the apple in hand, turning it over to a new space he hasn't eaten from yet.]
I will...probably. I'm just...
[He sighs, tossing the fruit up once.]
I hope Ruddiger's alright up there. I trust the others to take care of him, but...I couldn't exactly explain what happened, so...I ended up just leaving him behind.

And the others are empathetic. It is extremely unlikely they would leave him alone.
[It's...making an Attempt to be reassuring?]
no subject
Oh no, yeah, I'm sure the others are taking great care of him. Honestly, I'm a little more worried about the kind of trouble he could cause them than the other way around.
Snack Table
...Varian? Whatever is the matter, mon fils?
no subject
Oh, yeah. I just, uh...I was thinking about Ruddiger.
[He turns the apple over in his hand, sighing.]
Is...he doing okay, up there? Were you guys able to find him?

[Varian's shoulders slump a little. Peregrine, and the others...]
I'm really glad to hear that. I hated to just leave him in the woods like I did, but...anything else would have been cruel.

Salieri moves a bit closer so he can put an arm around him]
I can tell you that, last I saw him, he was being well-spoiled with all manner of fruit and vegetables and as many affectionate cuddles he could want. He even slept in bed with us for a time.
no subject
Really? Well...I'm glad to hear he's being spoiled even more than normal, in that case.
[Oh Varian, just you wait.]
I guess it's kindof...silly, I'm this hung up over a raccoon. But...he's my buddy, you know? He was kindof the first real friend I had...
no subject
...I'm sure you miss him quite a lot.
no subject
[Alive, he means.]
Ruddiger stayed with me when they sent me to prison. He stayed with me there a whole year...I didn't want him to have to go through this, too.
